Drunken Man Arrested for Defiling Mentally Challenged Girl in Chikwawa

A 35-year-old man in Chikwawa has been arrested for allegedly defiling an 18-year-old girl who is mentally disturbed. Chikwawa Police Station, Deputy Public Relations Officer Sergeant Dickson Matemba confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Mikeyasi Charles who committed the crime on Saturday in the afternoon hours. Matemba said Charles was coming from a drinking place when along the way to his home he met the girl who he dragged into the bush. “He was caught red-handed whilst in the evil act by the villagers who brought him to Chikwawa Police Station on the same day. “The victim was referred to Chikwawa District Hospital for medical examination and medical report revealed that the girl was defiled,” Matemba said. Meanwhile, Charles has been charged with the offence of defilement of an imbecile which contravenes Section 139 of the Penal Code. He will soon appear before the court of law. 32-year-old man  Commits Suicide In His Mum’s Presence

A 32-year-old man from Nigeria, identified as Aboh Ogbeche, is dead after committing suicide at his family residence in Lagos State. It was gathered that the deceased was said to have gulped a poisonous substance in the presence of his mother before he began to convulse on Friday July 17th, 2020. A close friend of the deceased said the mother, who was shocked by the incident, raised the alarm and Aboh was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was gathered that the deceased did not leave behind a suicide note or told any of his friends about his plan to commit suicide.

Man ‘kills self’ at girlfriend’s house after watching Man U-Chelsea game

Police in Kenya are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly committed suicide while at his lover’s single-room house. According to the deceased’s lover, she retired to bed early leaving her 32-year-old boyfriend watching the football match between English Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United in a FA Cup tie. The football tied ended 3-1 in favour of Chelsea. The woman told the police that she woke up at about 4 am on Monday morning, July 20, to find her boyfriend’s body hanging from the roof of the house. She said did not know why the man would have committed suicide since they had not quarreled. The boyfriend allegedly hanged himself to death using his own jacket. Police took the man’s body to the Makueni Referral Hospital mortuary. An experimental coronavirus vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford university was safe and produced an immune response in early-stage clinical trials, data showed on Monday, keeping alive the hope it could be in use by the end of the year. The vaccine, called AZD1222, has been described by the World Health Organisation’s chief scientist as the leading candidate in a global race to halt a pandemic that has claimed more than 600 000 lives. More than 150 possible vaccines are in various stages of development with US drugmaker Pfizer and China’s CanSino Biologics also reporting positive responses for their candidates on Monday. Death has been announced of Father Joachim Moloko Mwale of Karonga Diocese. Father Mwale died this morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe and burial is scheduled to take place this afternoon at Likuni Parish cemetery. Although the cause of his death is not known, unconfirmed reports indicates that the priest died of Coronavirus. “It is with deep sorrow to announce the death of Fr. Msekanawose Mwale this morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. “Burial arrangements are under way possibly it will be at Likuni and most likely this afternoon.   The family will be at Likuni Parish, those of us that can join the family lets do so. Revenue from Tobacco hit $129.7 Million

Revenue from tobacco hit $129.7 million at the end of week 13 of sales after trading about 85.4 million kilogrammes (kgs), figures from AHL Group show. During same time last year, the country sold about 104.5 million kg of all types of tobacco, realising $155.1 million. This represents an 18.2 percent decrease in sales volume and a 16.4 percent drop in seasonal earnings. While attributing the overall drop in sales and volumes to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tobacco Commission Chief Executive Officer, Kaisi Sadala, said the decline in tobacco supplies on the contract market could be attributed to a number of factors. This season tobacco output is estimated at 154.6 million kgs which is 6.6 percent lower than last year’s 165.6 million kgs. Malawi’s Former Head of state Peter Mutharika has hit back at politicians who politicized the deadly coronavirus during the time he was the president. Mutharika, writing on his Facebook page said his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration tried and urged people in the country to join him in fighting against the deadly virus seriously. The 80 year old ex-president worried that it was very unfortunate that a time that the country would have fought the pandemic, some Malawians politicized the efforts to the “extent of saying Corona Virus never existed in the country” He continued that it is frightening that the numbers of confirmed cases continue to rise and the death toll is sky-rocketing each passing day. APM’s Aide Chisale Remanded to Chichiri Prison

Former President Peter Mutharika’s security aide Norman Chisale has been remanded to Chichiri Prison for 7 more days. Chisale was re-arrested on Friday for assault charges after being granted bail on fraud and money laundering charges. Chisale was taken into custody for attempting murder charges. This morning, the court has ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to commit Chisale to the High Court, failing which the magistrate’s court will review his remand. Chief Resident Magistrate Simeon Mdeza presided over the case. Meanwhile, Chisale’s lawyer, Chancy Gondwe, has indicated that he will apply to the High Court to have his client released on bail because it remains his constitutional right.  

Police Officer Caught Red-Handed Making Love to a COVID-19 Patient in Quarantine

A police officer was on Friday, July 17 caught red-handed in a compromising situation with a Covid-19 patient whom he was supposed to be guarding. According to a police report, the incident happened at The Agricultural Training Centre in Busia County which serves as a Covid-19 isolation centre. The place is guarded  by three police officers and three warden officers where both remandees from Busia Prison and ordinary sick members of the public are kept in separate wards. At about 10 pm, as is routine, two officers both wardens from Busia GK Prison conducted their normal patrol within the facility. One of them started engaging a patient in talks. His colleague felt uncomfortable and proceeded to the guard room. He informed other officers what was happening and they all went to check on what was taking place. Attorney General to guide court on lockdown case

Newly appointed Attorney General Chikosa Silungwe has said his office will be involved in the High Court case regarding the implementation of the lockdown measures gazetted in April this year to contain the spread of Covid-19. The High Court hearing the case which was certified as constitutional has told the parties involved who include Human Rights Defenders Coalition, Prophet David Mbewe and Church and Society of Livingtonia Synod, among others to file submissions by today. Silungwe said his office will only guide the court by answering constitutional questions that have been given to them. Silungwe said in a constitutional matter, his office’s role is to strictly guide the court on the Constitution and not to argue in a partisan manner. Young Man Commits Suicide After Being Wrongly Accused

JusticeForlzu is currently trending on Twittr after a user named Legend Izu Madubueze took his life when a Twitter Influencer named Nachichi Anese published his name and other names as men accused of rape. It was revealed that Izu reached out to Nani and asked to know who he raped but she didn’t have a good answer, instead she claimed the accuser wanted to remain anonymous. She later said the alleged victim said it was a “non physical sexual assault”. Izu kept trying to clear his name but Nani was not cooperative. Izu later left a note apologizing though he stated that he doesn’t know what he did or who he hurt that led to him being accused. His last tweet was on Friday, July 17, and it reads: “Oh and if you’re reading this, I’m dead lol.” He eventually committed suicide and Nani has deactivated her account after Izu’s suicide was made public. Covid-19: Deaths Hit 62 in Malawi As Cases Near 3 Thousand

Malawi has registered 85 new COVID-19 cases, 18 new recoveries, and 3 new deaths. Of the new cases, 48 are locally transmitted infections and 37 are imported infections. Of the locally transmitted infections, three are healthcare workers (one each from Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, and Ntcheu), 25 from Blantyre, eight from Mzuzu, four each from Lilongwe and Zomba, and one each Dedza, Kasungu, Mulanje, and Ntcheu. All imported cases were identified among 171 Malawian residents returning from South Africa. Ntchisi District registered its first COVID-19 case on 17th July 2020 but was misclassified as for Dowa, this means that all districts in the country have confirmed COVID-19 cases. Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 2,992 cases including 62 deaths. Of these cases, 903 are imported infections and 2,089 are locally transmitted. Cumulatively, 1,153 cases have now recovered bringing the total number of active cases to 1,777.

Covid-19: Zambia league resumes after 28 test positive

Zambian Super League restarted on Sunday, one day behind schedule, after 28 players and staff of leaders Forest Rangers tested positive for Covid-19. The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) had made it mandatory for clubs to test players and staff as part of conditions for resumption of the league. Matches were to be played behind closed doors. The match between Forest Rangers and Zanaco FC was postponed on Saturday after the positive test results were revealed. But the league announced a resumption of all matches on Sunday after "a meeting with all stakeholders". Faz official Adrian Kashals said some clubs had relaxed adherence to Covid-19 guidelines. "We should never forget that the league resumption can always be halted if clubs do not adhere to the prescribed guidelines. Clubs will face stiff penalties for breaching Covid-19 guidelines, including losing points or matches being cancelled," Mr Kashals is quoted by AFP news agency as saying. Zambia

Chibuku Products Limited has recalled a batch of its Maheu product over incorrect labeling of the date of manufacture. In the last few days, Malawians on social media have been sharing a picture of super maheu bottle depicting the date of manufacture as 30 July 2020. Reacting to the outcry, the Company attributed the anomaly to an ink-jet malfunction that ended up in erroneously printing the date as July 30 instead of July 3. The Company has since asked all wholesalers and retailers to return the products. Meanwhile the Company has launched an investigations into the matter.

Zambia's President Edgar Lungu has denied claims of bankrolling a Rwandan rebel leader who is facing trial for attacks in his country in 2018 that left scores dead. Rebel leader, Callixte Nsabimana, told a Rwandan high court that President Lungu promised his National Liberation Front (FLN) some $1m (£796,000) to help topple the Rwandan government. He said President Lungu made a down payment of $150,000 in support of rebel attacks. But in a statement on Tuesday, President Lungu's spokesman said the "allegations are false and must be treated with the contempt they deserve". "The peoples of Zambia and Rwanda continue to enjoy strong and fraternal relations founded on mutual respect," presidential spokesman Isaac Chipampe said. Mr Nsabimana is facing 17 charges. They include formation of an illegal militia group, taking part in terrorist activities, killing, kidnapping and denying and undermining the 1994 genocide. He has pleaded guilty to all charges.

South African minister tests positive for Covid-19

South Africa's minister of mineral resources and energy, Gwede Mantashe, and his wife have tested positive for Covid-19. The couple is in isolation and the minister will continue to work from home, a statement from the cabinet said. This was Mr Mantashe third round of tests since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. "The minister has directed all members of his private office in government to also test," the statement said. South Africa has confirmed about 287,000 coronavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization, the highest on the continent.

DPP Deputy National Director of Operations Joe Nyirongo arrested

Deputy National Director of Operations for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Joe Nyirongo popularly known as “Big Joe” and three others have been arrested in Mzuzu. Nyirongo is being accused of attacking Lazarus Chakwera during an MCP he held a rally at Chibavi in 2016, an incident that left several people hacked and their vehicles smashed. But Police say since Nyirongo was released on bail, he has been defaulting his bail conditions, while the file for his case also went missing. Northern region police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed of the arrest in an interview with the press.

Madagascar’s president says two lawmakers have died from COVID-19

Two lawmakers in Madagascar have died of COVID-19 and at least 25 members of parliament and of the senate have been infected with the virus since the first case was confirmed on the island in March, President Andry Rajoelina said. Madagascar has had 5,080 confirmed novel coronavirus cases since then, and 37 deaths, according to the government data. A countrywide state of health emergency has been in place since March and the authorities re-imposed a lockdown in the capital and surrounding areas last week to contain the virus’s spread. “One deputy died. A senator died. After the tests carried out on the deputies, 11 members of parliament were detected carrying the coronavirus. At the Senate, 14 people, senators and agents of Senate carry the coronavirus,” Rajoelina said during an appearance on a talk show on national television late on Sunday. Government toughens covid 19 measures

Government ministries, departments and agencies and private-sector entities such as banks, hospitals and major retailers have toughened their Covid-19 prevention measures by directing that no one will be served there if they do not put on a face mask, among others. One of the public institutions which has announced the new measures, the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS), says the recent upsurge in Covid-19 cases has prompted the institution to put in place the measures which include limitations on vehicles seating capacities. DRTSS Public Relations Officer, Angellina Makwecha, said that some of the preventive measures include a reduction in public transport by 60 percent while observing social distance, disinfection of all public vehicles before commencement of every trip and washing hands of all passengers before entering a bus or a minibus. Burundi Couple Marries Days After Motorbike Crash

A young couple in Burundi’s northern city of Kirundo have surprised many by proceeding with their wedding plans despite the groom being involved in a serious accident a few days earlier. Charlotte Mukantwari married Gabin Ndayizigiye at the hospital where he was being treated following a motorcycle accident on 30 June. She has been at his bedside since the accident happened and both decided to hold the ceremony 4 July as they had planned. Despite the priest telling Ms Mukantwari to dress down, in what he expected to be a low-key event, she showed up wearing a wedding dress. “‘I’ve been waiting for that date, facing that challenge was like facing the devils’ temptation, I couldn’t imagine my life after missing it,” Ms Mukantwari told the BBC Gahuza service.
