MEC hands over election materials to Parliament

The Malawi Electoral Commission has today started handing over to Parliament of Malawi used election materials from the Fresh Presidential Election held on 23rd June, 2020.

Section 119 of the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act mandates the Clerk of Parliament to safely store used election materials for a period of 12 months after the election.

In his remarks marking the start of the exercise, MEC Chairperson, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale said the ballot materials includes summary of results, record books and ballot papers.

“I am grateful for the personnel available to discharge this work. I appreciate your presence and for all the effort invested in ensuring this process takes place,” the Chairperson said.

The Deputy Clerk of Parliament (Corporate Services) Mr. Chikondi Kachinjika said Parliament was committed to discharging its statutory duty religiously.

The exercise is being conducted under the watchful eye of Malawi Defense Force, Malawi Police Service as well as officials from Malawi Electoral Commission and Parliament of Malawi.

Sidhaat Kooranah Prince well known as Javas Prince was one of the Administrators of a Malawian group on Facebook called   Malawian Scandals Osadeweza Original. According to reports, Javas was in his shop when the unknown people putting on a mask and a hood shot him twice in the head. However, reasons for his killings are not known. 6 days prior to his death, Javas Prince updated a status on his personal Facebook account accepting his defeat and saying time for him to rest has come. “Sometimes we need to accept defeat, till we meet again in the next life. Deforestation and Charcoal Burning in Dzalanyama

The Department of Forestry says deforestation and charcoal burning has escalated in Dzalanyama forest reserve since Malawi defence force soldiers stopped conducting patrols in the reserve. Deputy Director of Forestry Francis Chilimampunga has told Zodiak that, one effective forest patrol for a week cost K10 million for fuel, allowances and other logistical requirements . Chilimampunga said, the department through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change is planning to request MDF to open their own camps in Dzalanyama for sustainable management of the reserve. He said currently, less than 30 forest guards are manning 98,000 hectares of Dzalanyama forest reserve against a requirement of over 500 forest guards.

APM’s Aide Chisale Remanded to Chichiri Prison

Former President Peter Mutharika’s security aide Norman Chisale has been remanded to Chichiri Prison for 7 more days. Chisale was re-arrested on Friday for assault charges after being granted bail on fraud and money laundering charges. Chisale was taken into custody for attempting murder charges. This morning, the court has ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to commit Chisale to the High Court, failing which the magistrate’s court will review his remand. Chief Resident Magistrate Simeon Mdeza presided over the case. Meanwhile, Chisale’s lawyer, Chancy Gondwe, has indicated that he will apply to the High Court to have his client released on bail because it remains his constitutional right.
